Baseball Digest Rookie All-Star Teams
The Baseball Digest's All-Star Rookie Team is a select team of first-year (rookie) players in Major League Baseball by the magazine Baseball Digest.
The first team was chosen in 1971. In the team's first three years eleven players were selected, one player for each position and two pitchers, one left-hander and one right-hander. From 1975 to 1979 four pitchers were selected, with the additional pitchers being chosen irrespective of handedness (only one pitcher of each handedness was selected in 1977). In 1980 pitchers began to be chosen by role, instead of hand, with three starters and two relievers being picked. However through 1986 variable numbers of pitchers were chosen, ranging from six (1985) to three - all starters - in 1984. Later, a three starter, two reliever split was settled on. Starting in 1986, three outfielders were irresgardless of their actual position on the field. Through the 1990s the slots allotted to pitchers again varied widely. In 2003 a closer spot was added.
In 1987 a utility position was added for Casey Candaele, who split time evenly between second base (68 games) and the outfield (67 games). In 1994, American League Rookie of the Year Bob Hamelin was named the team's designated hitter.
