History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 2000 St. Louis Cardinals set a record by hitting 29 homers over their first 11 games while going 7-4. No team would match that until the 2023 Tampa Bay Rays. They had actually started off with seven wins over their first eight games and almost never looked back after that, only spending a total of three days out of first place during the entire season on their way to winning a division title. Two big boppers contributed to their home run barrage: CF Jim Edmonds who would hit 42 and 1B Mark McGwire who would hit 32. McGwire had an unusual batting line in what was for him an injury-plagued penultimate season: he hit 32 homers after blasting 70 and 65 long balls the previous two years, but did it in basically half a season, as he appeared in just 89 games. His 73 RBIs also kept pace with the 147 he had collected over full seasons both previous years, but he hit just 8 doubles.
