Hall of Famer Arky Vaughan was one of the greatest shortstops ever. He played 14 years in the majors with a batting average of .318, which puts him at # 59 on the all-time list for career batting average. Honus Wagner, generally considered the greatest shortstop of all time, is nine points higher, and Derek Jeter finished at .310 in 20 seasons. Wagner had played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and was a coach for the Pirates during most of Vaughan's time with the team, giving Vaughan help on hitting. He made nine straight All-Star teams and had the highest single-season average of any 20th Century NL shortstop. Not just a singles hitter, he was routinely among the league leaders in numerous categories. Hall of Fame manager Whitey Herzog (pictured) dies at age 92. Ronel Blanco of the Houston Astros pitches a no-hitter against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Tiburones de La Guaira win their first ever Caribbean Series title; Ricardo Pinto in named Caribbean Series MVP. Jesús Feliciano, César Tovar, Odell Jones, Francisco Campos and Julian Tavarez are inducted into the Caribbean Baseball Hall of Fame. Ángel Padrón of La Guaira becomes only the second pitcher in the history of the Caribbean Series to pitch a no-hitter in defeating Rivas, 9-0.

April 25: Today's featured birthday is that of Bill Greif, who turns 74. 1957 - In response to actions by Don Hoak and Johnny Temple of the Reds, Major League Baseball bans baserunners from intentionally interfering with a ball in play. 1976 - Rick Monday (pictured) saves an American flag about to be burned at Dodger Stadium. Two individuals had gone into the outfield with the flag, intending to set it on fire. 2000 - Numerous Cuban-American players sit out the day due to a strike called by the community over the Elian Gonzalez affair. Players and coaches who sit out are Alex Fernandez, Vladimir Núñez, Michael Tejera, Mike Lowell, Jose Canseco, Cookie Rojas and Rey Ordóñez. 2001 - Rickey Henderson breaks Babe Ruth's career MLB walk record by drawing his 2,063th. While Ruth had held the record for 70 years, Henderson's reign will last only three years before Barry Bonds surpasses him. 2005: 35 years after he was banned for life from Nippon Pro Baseball, former Nishitetsu Lions star Masaaki Ikenaga has the verdict rescinded.
