Purpose[edit]

The SABR/Baseball Reference Encyclopedia is an attempt to collect and organize the vastness of baseball knowledge. All things baseball.

It was launched as the "BR Bullpen" on July 21, 2005 as part of Baseball-Reference.com. Initial pages were stocked with basic information for all players, teams and leagues. An additional suggested section structure was created, but it was assumed that these would be very fluid for the first months or year of its launch.

On July 16, 2014, it merged with a similar project maintained by the Society for American Baseball Research called "The SABRpedia," and the new collaboration was named The SABR/Baseball Reference Encyclopedia.

SABRpedia entries such as the Spread of Baseball Project and the Collegiate Baseball Database are now available in the same place as the Bullpen's detailed histories of Negro League teams and minor league players.

What's a Wiki?[edit]

The SABR/Baseball Reference Encyclopedia is a wiki. A wiki is the most extreme collaborative website imaginable. Wiki software allows any user at any time to edit any page in any way. Imagine thousands of chalkboards each of them describing a particular topic. At any one time someone can come and erase what was written, change what you wrote, or add to what you wrote. That is the idea behind this. Unlike a chalkboard a record of all contributions is maintained, so vandalism can be undone and quality contributions can be maintained. Wikis have their own formatting style that can take a little getting used to. To see how something was done you can always use the edit button.

Some important tips about contribution: do not post copyrighted information; do not post snippets from books, websites, or magazines; post using your own knowledge in your own words. We would hate to have to delete everything that you've written.
