2000 Major League Baseball

The 2000 Major League Baseball season was the first season in which the two major leagues, the National League and the American League, were consolidated into a single entity under the authority of the Commissioner, Bud Selig. The roster of umpires was also unified for the first time that year.

For the first time, a major league season opened in Japan, as the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets played a two-game series at the Tokyo Dome on March 29-30. The year marked the height of the so-called "steroid era" with home runs being hit at a record pace. The 5,693 homers hit in the majors that season were an all-time record, eclipsing the mark of 5,528 set only a year earlier and it would not be topped until 2017.
