2013 Major League Baseball
The 2013 Major League Baseball season was the fourteenth season in which the two major leagues, the National League and the American League, were consolidated into a single entity under the authority of the Commissioner, Bud Selig.
Events[edit]
Before the 2013 season, Major League Baseball proceeded with a realignment of its six divisions by moving the Houston Astros from the National League Central to the American League West. This gave the major leagues six divisions of five teams each, permitting a more balanced schedule, but also forcing the playing of interleague games during the entire season (they had previously been limited to specific periods of time). The postseason format also changed, with the addition of a second wild card team; the two wild card teams in each league would now play a single Wild Card Game to determine which team would play the team with the best regular season record in each league in the Division Series.
The 2013 World Baseball Classic was held during spring training. The Dominican Republic was the winner of the third edition of the tournament, going undefeated and beating Puerto Rico in the finale.
The use of instant replay was also expanded prior to the 2013 season, with the areas open to review wider than only home run calls, as had been the case since the introduction of the system in 2008. The decision to request a video review was still the purview of the umpiring crew, however.
