2004 Major League Baseball
The 2004 Major League Baseball season was the fifth season in which the two major leagues, the National League and the American League, were consolidated into a single entity under the authority of the Commissioner, Bud Selig.
Events[edit]
2004 was the last season that Major League Baseball had ownership of the Montreal Expos. As had been the case in 2003, the Expos were forced to play a number of home games in San Juan, Puerto Rico and were allowed to operate only on a minimal budget. As the season was winding down, MLB announced that the team would be relocated to Washington, DC the following season. In addition, the season opened with a two-game series at the Tokyo Dome for the second time, the first having come in 2000. The New York Yankees faced off against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on March 30 and 31st.
On April 15th, Major League Baseball formally celebrated Jackie Robinson Day for the first time. The day had been marked before in certain years, but it would now become a formal part of the Baseball Calendar.
