Frank J. Sylvester

Frank Sylvester was a replacement umpire in the National League for 5 games when the regular umpires were on strike in 1995. He had been a minor league umpire before that, starting out in the New York-Penn League in 1980, then working in the South Atlantic League in 1981, the Florida State League in 1982, the Eastern League from 1983 to 1985 and the International League starting in 1985.

He then returned to the majors to work one more game, on July 23, 2004 in his hometown of Philadelphia, PA. That day, only Darren Spagnardi showed up on time for the game; the other three member so his crew were late, so three local amateur umpires were drafted to help out on the bases while Spagnardi was at home plate, until the three others showed up in the 2nd inning.

He has been a long-time college umpire, working the 2003 College World Series, 2009 College World Series and 2012 College World Series most notably.
