Events[edit]

In 2012, a second wild card team was introduced in each league's postseason format, leading to the playing of a Wild Card Game to determine which team would advance to play the team with the leagues's best overall record in the Division Series. Also in 2012, the 26th Man Rule went into effect; it allowed teams to add one extra player to their roster during doubleheaders.

The season opened with a two-game series between the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan on March 28-29.
