Biographical Information

Ed Hickox is a major league umpire.

He worked in the Gulf Coast League (1983), Florida State League (1983-1985), Southern League (1986-1987), Dominican League (1988), Puerto Rican League (1989), International League (1989-1997) and Pacific Coast League (1998). He first worked as an American League umpire in 1990, serving as a fill-in for five seasons before earning a full-time position on the league's umpiring staff in 1996. He lost his job as part of the mass resignations of MLB umpires in 1999.

Hickox returned to Organized Baseball in 2002 with the New York-Penn League and moved up to the South Atlantic League (2003) and Florida State League (2004). He made it back to the major leagues in 2005, after a settlement was reached to end the mass resignation fiasco, and he worked the 2006 World Baseball Classic, as well as the 2011 All-Star Game. He missed most of the 2009 season because of an injury.

A sign of his remarkable longevity is that he was the home plate umpire for Alex Rodriguez's first hit as a major leaguer in 1994, and again when he joined the 3,000 hit club in 2015.

Hickox works as a detective for the Daytona Beach Shores Police Department in the off-season and is also a pilot.
