Biographical Information

Standing 6' 7", Jordan Baker is possibly the tallest man to have ever been a major league baseball umpire. He got his first major league experience in 2012, when he umpired 72 games as a fill-in umpire. He was only in his second year in the Pacific Coast League when he was put on the major league's replacement umpire roster. He was back in the big leagues at the start of the 2013 season and on April 9th ejected Cleveland Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco for throwing at the New York Yankees' Kevin Youkilis. The ejection came without warning, as Carrasco already had a reputation as a hothead, having just finished serving a six-game suspension for throwing at a batter in 2011 (it had taken him over a year to serve the suspension as he had undergone Tommy John surgery in the interim).

Baker was added to the major league's full-time umpiring staff prior to the 2014 season, which was not a surprise given that his work had received a lot of praise in his two seasons as a fill-in. On July 26, 2020 he was the first umpire to be involved in an argument with a manager under the new health and safety protocols implemented in response to the coronavirus pandemic. After ejecting P Derek Holland, who was riding him from the stands, he carefully pulled his facemask out of his back pocket and put it on while Pittsburgh Pirates manager adjusted his own facial protection, and the two remained a safe distance away while arguing the ejection.
