Events[edit]

2008 marked the first introduction of instant replay in Major League Baseball. It was introduced in mid-year, on August 28th and was only in use to make decisions on home runs. It was also the final season in which the QuesTec system was used to evaluate umpires consistency in calling balls and strikes.

The season started with a two-game series between the Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics at the Tokyo Dome on March 25-26, the third time an opening series had been staged in Japan after 2000 and 2004.
