History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
Before the season, the 2008 Orioles traded long-time shortstop Miguel Tejada to the Houston Astros in return for a package of players, including outfielder Luke Scott and pitcher Dennis Sarfate. They also traded their best pitcher, left-hander Erik Bedard to the Seattle Mariners for CF Adam Jones and pitchers George Sherrill and Kameron Mickolio. All-in-all, the Orioles made out well from both trades, but they suffered all season from an inability to replace Tejada at SS. Veteran defensive specialist Juan Castro ended up putting in the most time at the position, but he only batted 151 times with a .205 batting average and a .256 OBP. Others who tried unsuccessfully to fill Tejada's shoes were Brandon Fahey (.226), Freddie Bynum (.179), Alex Cintron (by far the best hitter of the bunch at .286) and Luis Hernandez (.241). This instability, combined with a mediocre cast of pitchers and the sudden improvement of traditional AL East doormats the Tampa Bay Rays, meant that Baltimore finished in last place in spite of a much-improved offense.
