The 1983 Baltimore Orioles, who had narrowly missed the postseason in 1982, were managed by first-year skipper Joe Altobelli. Their offense was led by shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., the American League Most Valuable Player, and first baseman Eddie Murray, the MVP runner-up. Baltimore's pitching staff of Scott McGregor, Mike Boddicker, Mike Flanagan and Storm Davis was quite solid and led the American league in shutouts. They won the AL East title and then defeated the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS. They then went on to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.
