Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Marty Mason played several seasons in the New York Yankees and St. Louis Cardinals farm systems from 1980-1986. He was a relief pitcher who posted some good numbers in the lower minors but who was never considered a serious prospect. In fact, he never played higher than AA

Mason was one of three marginal minor leaguers sent by the Yankees to the Cardinals in return for two prospects, Bobby Meacham and Stan Javier, on December 14, 1982. This unbalanced trade was widely seen by observers as payback by the Cardinals for sending injured pitcher Bob Sykes to the Yankees a year earlier, in a deal that had landed them OF Willie McGee. This deal had infuriated Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, who was threatening all sort of nasty revenge on the Cards had they not offered to even things up.

Mason was player coach in 1986 for the St. Petersburg Cardinals and was pitching coach there in 1987. He was then pitching coach for the Savannah Cardinals in 1988, St. Pete in 1989, and the Arkansas Travelers from 1990 to 1996. He was the pitching coach for the Louisville Redbirds in 1997 and Memphis Redbirds in 1998-1999. Mason was the Cardinals bullpen coach from 2000 to 2010. Mason became the pitching coach of the Tennessee Smokies in 2011, then in 2012 moved down to the Daytona Cubs along with manager Brian Harper. Mason moved to the Minnesota Twins organization as pitching coach of the Rochester Red Wings in 2013-2015.
