Team History[edit]

In 1982 the Springfield Redbirds, the AAA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, moved to Louisville and became the Louisville Redbirds. Playing in the huge Cardinal Stadium, the home of the University of Louisville's football team, they shattered the minor league single-season attendance record with 868,418. Shattered, indeed: The old record, set in 1946 as ballparks re-opened after World War II, was 670,563. The next year, 1983, the team won the American Association Eastern Division and became the first team in minor league history to draw over 1,000,000 fans. The Redbirds went on to capture league championships in 1984, 1985, and 1995.

After the 1997 season, the American Association folded, and the franchise moved to the International League and at the same time became an affilate of the Milwaukee Brewers. As a result, the club changed its name to the Louisville RiverBats.
