Biographical Information[edit]

Outfielder/first baseman Chris Maloney played minor league baseball in the New York Mets (1983-1985) and St. Louis Cardinals (1986) organizations, reaching as high as class A ball. His father J. Con Maloney was a long-time minor league executive.

Since his playing career ended, he has spent over fifteen years as a minor league coach and manager in the Cardinals and Houston Astros systems. He was a coach for the Springfield (IL) Cardinals in 1988, Arkansas Travelers in 1989, Hamilton Redbirds in 1990, and Louisville Redbirds in 1997. From 2002 to 2004, he managed the New Orleans Zephyrs, and the next two seasons, he was skipper of the Springfield Cardinals of the Texas League. He took over as manager of the Memphis Redbirds in 2007. After the 2011 season, he was interviewed as a potential successor for Tony LaRussa with the St. Louis Cardinals, but lost out to Mike Matheny. All was not lost however as he was named the Cards' first base coach for 2012. In 2016, he moved to third base coach when Jose Oquendo had to miss the season after knee surgery. On June 9, 2017 he was replaced in the position by Mike Shildt after being reassigned to other duties within the organization.

Maloney was scheduled to be the manager of the Mississippi Braves in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19.
