Team History[edit]
The Springfield Cardinals, based in Springfield, IL, competed in the Midwest League from 1982 to 1993. The team moved to Madison, WI after the 1993 season and became the Madison Hatters. They were replaced in the city by the Springfield Sultans.
Before the Cardinals, Springfield had hosted the Springfield Redbirds of the AAA American Association, who moved from New Orleans, LA before the 1978 season and on to Louisville, KY, after the 1981 campaign.
These Springfield Cardinals are not to be confused with the Springfield (OH) Cardinals that competed in the Middle Atlantic League from 1941-1942, or the Springfield (MO) Cardinals in the Western Association 1932, 1935-1942, Western League 1933, the Texas League 2005-2019 and since 2022, and in the Double-A Central (in 2021).
