In 1994 the Springfield Cardinals moved to Madison, WI and became the Madison Hatters. The team filled a void in the Midwest League city after the Madison Muskies moved to the Grand Rapids, MI vicinity. The Hatters missed the first-half southern division title by one game with a 37-33 record but went 29-40 in the second half. The team got some fine pitching - Jay Witasick made the league All-Star team after a 10-4, 2.32 season (fourth in the MWL in ERA); Ray Davis was 12-10 with a 2.96 ERA (7th); and closer Jeff Matulevich (3-4, 30 Sv, 2.84) led the MWL in saves. The club, managed by Joe Cunningham, also had an All-Star OF in Joe McEwing, who hit .324/~.381/.439 and finished third in the circuit in batting average. The next season the team moved again, this time to Battle Creek, MI, and they were re-named the Michigan Battle Cats.
