Biographical Information[edit]

Mike Colbern caught 80 games with the Chicago White Sox, batting .259. He was the MVP of the 1975 National Baseball Congress World Series while playing for the Boulder Collegians. In 2003, he launched an unsuccessful lawsuit against Major League Baseball on behalf of himself and other white retirees challenging MLB's right to sponsor a plan that paid the health costs of pre-1947 Negro League players, but not his and his fellow Caucasians'. One part of the lawsuit was settled, alleging medical malpractice at the hands of team doctors. Prior to his death in 2019, at 63, Colbern received two payments of $1,850 in the settlement. His father, Louis, was a minor league third baseman in 1942.
