Biographical Information

With good power and plus speed, Alex Gonzalez went 2 for 5 with four RBI on Opening Day, 1995, thus solidifying his position as the Toronto Blue Jays' starting shortstop. He also showed some late-inning flair in June of that year, with two game-winning hits - one a single to beat the Boston Red Sox, 4-3, in the 11th inning, the other a 9th-inning single to beat the Baltimore Orioles, 6-5.

He also was the guy who, playing for the Chicago Cubs, booted the potential double play ball in the top of the 8th inning of Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS that allowed the Florida Marlins' 8-run inning to continue, which ultimately led to the Cubs losing the NLCS. Famously in that series, both teams' starting shortstop were named Alex Gonzalez - the other Alex Gonzalez was playing for the Marlins. This followed a superb defensive season in which Gonzalez only committed 10 errors in 150 games at shortstop to the tune of a .984 fielding percentage. Gonzalez was a good defensive player.

During a one-year stretch from 2002 to 2003, Gonzalez hit five walk-off home runs for the Cubs. It might be an all-time record.
