Biographical Information[edit]

David Howard was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 32nd round of the 1986 amateur draft. David signed almost a year later, on May 15, 1987. He spent his first year with the class A Florida State League Fort Myers Royals where he hit for a .194 average. He then spent four more years in the minors with the Appleton Foxes, Baseball City Royals, Memphis Chicks and Omaha Royals. At the end of this five-year period Dave was carrying a .205 batting average.

The Royals gave Dave his first look at the major league caliber of play at the beginning of the 1991 season and he hit for a .216 average in 94 games and 236 at bats. He stayed with the Royals through the 1997 season, when he was granted free agency on October 28th, and on December 4th, he signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Cardinals.

Dave was the Cardinals' shortstop in 1998 and 1999 but was sent to the Pacific Coast League's Memphis Redbirds late in 1999. Sources show Dave was out of baseball in 2000 but he had one last appearance as a player in 2001 with the Norfolk Tides, where he got into four games.

David carried a .229 batting average in his nine-year major league career and just about the same during his minor league tours. To the man's credit, he did have a career .976 fielding percentage at the always tough shortstop position.

He is the son of pitcher Bruce Howard. He had a cameo in a sketch on Saturday Night Live, on December 13, 1997.
