1986 Amateur Draft

The 1986 amateur draft was held on June 2, 1986. 3B Jeff King of the University of Arkansas was the first overall pick, by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
1986 was the last year when a separate January amateur draft was held, on January 14th. P Jeff Shaw was the first selection, by the Cleveland Indians out of Cuyahoga Community College. It was also the final year of the draft having a secondary phase, for players who had been picked in a previous draft but had not signed. Starting in 1987, there would be only one draft, held in early June, covering all eligible players.

Draft Notes[edit]
- Greg McMurtry, the 14th pick, would later play in the National Football League
- Mike Loynd, a 6th round selection by the Texas Rangers, made his major league debut on July 24th, a full month before Greg Swindell, who was the first player selected in the 1st round to do so.
