Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Chris Shiflett was the third player selected in the January 1986 amateur draft, the last time that draft was held. Contrary to the two players chosen ahead of him, Jeff Shaw and Moises Alou, who both went on to long and productive major league careers, he never played above AA.

The Texas Rangers selected him out of Rancho Santiago College and he started his professional career later that year, making a single appearance for the GCL Rangers, pitching 3 hitless and scoreless innings. He again made just one appearance in 1987, this time for the Port Charlotte Rangers of the Florida State League, a sign that he was suffering with health issues. His career finally started in earnest, more or less, in 1988 when he was with the Gastonia Rangers of the South Atlantic League for 9 games, including 3 starts. His ERA of 8.57 was far from impressive though. He did better in 1989, with the Butte Copper Kings, going 5-2, 4.24 with 1 save in 15 games, but then again he was a 23-year-old pitching in the Rookie-level Pioneer League. His 57 1/3 innings that season were the most he would ever pitch for any team or in any full season.

He came closest to fulfilling his potential when he was in AA with the Tulsa Drillers from 1990 to 1992, but was constantly injured, winning a grand total of 1 game (against 2 losses) in 28 games over the three seasons. He also appeared briefly with Port Charlotte in 1992, which was his final season in the pros. Overall, his record in 7 minor league seasons was 6-5, 4.36 in 58 games, with 6 saves.

His name is sometimes wrongly spelled "Shifflett" in some sources.
