Team History[edit]

Tides players in 2010.

The Norfolk Tides of the International League, and briefly in Triple-A East, sail with a seaport-appropriate nickname that dates to 1962. The Baltimore Orioles farmhands play their home games at Harbor Park in Norfolk, VA.

"Tides" was preceded by the equally seafaring "Tars" that was first used sometime between 1885 and 1906 and last used by the team that folded in 1955. Professional baseball returned in the form of a South Atlantic League franchise in 1961, originating the Tides nickname.

The locale name has changed more than the nickname - Portsmouth, Norfolk, a hyphenation of both, the topography-based Peninsula, and the regional Tidewater.

The current Tides franchise played as the Tidewater Tides from 1969 to 1992.

The Tides play Copa de la Diversión Hispanic engagement campaign games as Pajaritos de Norfolk (Portsmouth Birdies).
