Biographical Information

Sean Berry was drafted by the Kansas City Royals but got his first real chance as a regular with the Montreal Expos after being traded for Chris Haney. He was the starting third baseman on the great 1994 Expos team that had the best record in baseball before the 1994 strike. His best season may have been 1996, with the Houston Astros, when he set career marks in home runs (17), RBI (95) and games played (132) en route to a .281/.328/.492 batting line. In eleven big league seasons, he batted a respectable .272 with a .445 slugging percentage.

Berry began his coaching career as a hitting coach for the Round Rock Express in 2003. He started 2004 in the same role until the parent team Houston Astros started firing people. On July 14th the Astros dismissed manager Jimy Williams, hitting coach Harry Spilman, and pitching coach Burt Hooton. This sent reverberations down through the minor leagues. When New Orleans Zephyrs hitting coach Gary Gaetti was promoted to the Astros, Berry was promoted to New Orleans. In 2005 Berry took over as the Astros minor league hitting coordinator and lasted until July 12, 2006 when the Astros fired Gaetti and promoted Berry to the majors on an interim basis. After the season, the interim tag was removed. He kept the job until the All-Star break in 2010, when he was replaced by Hall of Famer and former teammate Jeff Bagwell; Houston had some of the worst hitting statistics in the majors at the time.

In 2011, Berry became the minor league hitting coordinator for the San Diego Padres, a position he retained through 2014. Berry was hitting coach of the Norfolk Tides from 2015 to 2017. Following the 2015 season he also worked as the hitting coach for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. He was minor league hitting coordinator for the Miami Marlins in 2018 and hitting coach of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in 2019. He was scheduled to be hitting coach of the Tides in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19.
