Team History[edit]

In 1969, as the minor leagues started to reorganize to create affiliates for the four new major league teams created by the expansion of 1969, the Jacksonville Suns moved to Portsmouth, VA to become the Tidewater Tides. They played their inaugural season at the old Lawrence Stadium before moving to purpose-built Metropolitan Memorial Park in Norfolk, VA in 1970. The were a New York Mets affiliate for their entire tenure.

A predecessor team in the South Atlantic League was known as the Portsmouth-Norfolk Tides (1961-1962), and then then the Portsmouth Tides, who played in the Carolina League from 1963 to 1968. They became the Norfolk Tides in 1993.
