Biographical Information[edit]

Bob Schaefer was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1966 and spent three seasons as a shortstop in their organization. After his playing career ended, he went on to be a coach, minor league manager, and front office excutive for various clubs. He was a Kansas City Royals coach from 1988 to 1991 and again from 2002 to 2005. He has also twice been interim manager of the Royals. He led the team for a game in 1991 after John Wathan was fired and before Hal McRae was hired. In May 2005, he managed the club for almost three weeks before Buddy Bell was hired to replace Tony Pena, who had resigned suddenly.

In 2007, Schaefer was named bench coach of the Oakland Athletics. He was a coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2008 to 2010. In 2011 Schaefer is Special Assistant to the General Manager for the Washington Nationals.
