The Jackson Mets began play in 1975 when the New York Mets decided to relocate their AA franchise, the Victoria Toros, to Jackson, Mississippi. The team, which played its home games at Smith-Wills Stadium, captured three Texas League titles. In 1980, under the leadership of manager Bob Wellman, they won their first championship. Pitcher Tim Leary went 15-8 that season, and future big leaguer Jesse Orosco was the club's closer. Rookie skipper Sam Perlozzo led them to another title in 1984. The team's lineup that year included Billy Beane, who hit 20 home runs, and Lenny Dykstra, who stole 53 bases. The Mets pitching staff was anchored by Calvin Schiraldi, who went 14-3, and also featured Rick Aguilera, Roger McDowell, Jay Tibbs, and Floyd Youmans. The next year, the team repeated as champs, led by Dave Magadan, Randy Milligan, Mark Carreon, and Barry Lyons, all of whom hit over .300.
Other notable names to play for the Mets include Lee Mazzilli, Mookie Wilson, Mike Scott, Jeff Reardon, Hubie Brooks, Darryl Strawberry, Kevin Mitchell, and Kevin Elster. Davey Johnson also managed the club in 1981.
From 1978 to 1987, the Mets were consistently one of the best teams in the Texas League, making the playoffs nine times (eight in a row), seven championship series (five in a row), three league championships, and three league MVPs.
After the 1990 season, the Jackson Mets became a Houston Astros affiliate and were renamed the Jackson Generals.
