Biographical Information[edit]

First baseman/outfielder Tom Burgess had a cup of coffee in the majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954 and a more prolonged stay with the Los Angeles Angels in 1962. He played for the Rochester Red Wings from 1953 to 1958, hitting 93 home runs over that span. In 104 big league games, he socked 2 home runs and batted .177

After his playing career, Burgess managed in the minors for many years. He was a New York Mets coach in 1977 and an Atlanta Braves coach in 1978. He later scouted Ontario for the Seattle Mariners. Burgess coached for Team Canada in the 2001 Baseball World Cup and 2003 Baseball World Cup. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum in 1992 and the London, ON Sports Hall of Fame at the John Labatt Centre in 2003. He is also a member of the Rochester Red Wings Hall of Fame. Burgess died of cancer at his home at 81.
