Biographical Information[edit]

Former Kansas City Royals first base coach Tom Gamboa is best known for having been attacked on the field by two fans during a 2002 game against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park. Gamboa received permanent hearing loss from the attack.

Gamboa was a manager in the Milwaukee Brewers chain, managing the Paintsville Brewers in 1983, the Beloit Brewers in 1984, and the Stockton Ports in 1985. Moving to the Detroit Tigers he managed the Bristol Tigers in 1986. He was then the Field Coordinator for the Tigers, returning to the field to replace fired managers in 1987 and 1990. He reached the majors as the Chicago Cubs third base coach in 1998 and 1999 and served on the Royals coaching staff from 2001 to 2003.

In 2005, Gamboa managed the Arkansas Travelers in the Los Angeles Angels chain. In 2008-2009 Gamboa was the San Diego Padres' Minor League field coordinator. He returned to the Angels as manager of the Inland Empire 66ers in 2011. He was bench coach of the Israeli national team in the 2017 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.
