Paintsville Brewers

From BR Bullpen

The most recent (as of 2006) professional baseball club from Paintsville, KY, the Paintsville Brewers replaced the Paintsville Yankees. They went 47-25 their first year to claim the Appalachian League pennant under manager Tom Gamboa. They led the Appy League in both runs scored (482) and fewest runs allowed (342) but were last in attendance (8,023). The club's players took six of the eleven spots on the league All-Star team, a very impressive feat - they were 3B Kerry Evertt (.297/~.351/.513, 13 HR), SS Hector Quinones (.269/~.327/.325), OF Glenn Braggs (.390/~.508/.681, 22 SB in 29 tries, 16 homers, 74 RBI in 73 games) and La Vel Freeman (.307/~.410/.451) and pitchers Mark Ciardi (7-2, 3.23, 80 K in 69 2/3 IP) and Dan Plesac (9-1, 3.50, 85 K in 82 1/3 IP). Braggs led the league in average, OBP, slugging, runs (65), hits (94), total bases (164), doubles (20), walks (54), intentional walks (6) and RBI and tied Christopher Baird for the home run lead. Plesac led the league in wins and strikeouts and Ciardi was third in ERA and tied for second in strikeouts. Chris Bosio (2-2, 2.84) and Mike Birkbeck (3-1, 1.88) pitched well in limited time.

In 1984, the Brewers were 37-33 under Ron Hansen and finished only a half game behind the Pulaski Braves in the northern division race. Paintsville outscored the competition 384-336 and again let the fewest runners score. The only All-Star this time was OF Tim Casey (.292/~.425/.576). Casey led the league in hits (73), total bases (144), slugging, homers (18) and RBI (52) and tied for the lead in walks (54). None of the players went on to achieve the future success of 1983's Bosio or Birkbeck, let alone Plesac. They were second-worst in attendance that year at 7,595 fans drawn.
