Biographical Information

Rusty Gerhardt was a star at Clemson University from 1969-1972, achieving 34 victories. In the majors, he had a record of 2-1 with one save in 23 appearances with the San Diego Padres in 1974.

He was MVP of the 1970 National Baseball Congress World Series while pitching for the Grand Rapids Sullivans, who won the tournament.

Gerhardt was forced into service as a player-manager for the Amarillo Gold Sox in May 1979 when Glenn Ezell underwent open-heart surgery. He was a coach with the Beaumont Golden Gators in 1983, Oklahoma City 89ers in 1984-1986, Gastonia Rangers in 1987, and the Charlotte Rangers in 1988-1989. He then went to work as a pitching coach for the Major League Scouting Bureau and as a scout for the Texas Rangers.
