Team History

The name Miami Marlins was first used by the Miami franchise in the International League from 1956 to 1960. It was then kept on by the team in the Florida State League which replaced it in 1962 after the Marlins had moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1961. That team played in the longest game up to that time on June 14, 1966, beating the St. Petersburg Cardinals in 29 innings in a game that went on past a curfew until the early hours of June 15th. That game still remains the longest in organized baseball history to be played without interruption, and only the longest game in baseball history, which lasted 33 innings in 1981, has ever gone longer.

The FSL Miami Marlins franchise was known as the Miami Orioles from 1971-1981. The franchise became the Miami Miracle in 1989 and then the Fort Myers Miracle in 1992.

The name was resurrected in 2012 when the Florida Marlins moved to a new downtown Miami, FL ballpark and agreed to revive the name at the urging of municipal authorities who had invested in the stadium. Information about the major league team can be found here.
