Biographical Information[edit]

2B/SS Steve Smith was selected by the San Diego Padres in the 24th round of the 1976 amateur draft and spent seven seasons playing in the minors.

Smith was a minor league manager for the Padres from 1983 to 1989. He managed at AAA for the Texas Rangers in 1990, then joined the Seattle Mariners organization. He managed in the minors in 1991 and 1994 to 1995, while serving as a roving infield instructor in 1992-1993. Smith was a member of the big league Mariners coaching staff from 1996 to 1999 Mariners. Moving to the Milwaukee Brewers chain in 2000 as manager of the Indianapolis Indians, he led the club to the International League Championship and a victory in the Triple-A World Series. In 2001 he was the Brewers' roving minor league infield instructor. From 2002 to 2006, Smith was a Texas Rangers coach, and he joined the Philadelphia Phillies as third base coach for the 2007 season. In 2010, he became the Cleveland Indians' third base coach.

He was the third base coach of the Cincinnati Reds in 2014.

Despite an overall managerial record of 779-903 (.463), Smith has never lost a playoff series.

Smith and his daughter Allison were contestants on the reality show The Amazing Race in its 16th edition.
