Biographical Information

Infielder/outfielder José Arcia started his professional career as a pitcher. He was a fielding star for the early San Diego Padres but not a strong hitter.

The Padres chose him 9th in the 1968 expansion draft from the Chicago Cubs, who had drafted him in the 1967 Rule V Draft from the St. Louis Cardinals (Tulsa). He started at second base for the young Padres in 1969, hitting .215 with 11 doubles and 3 triples, and stealing 14 bases. In 1970, he moved to shortstop after the Padres acquired Dave Campbell from the Detroit Tigers. He hit .223 that year with 3 triples, 17 RBI and 3 steals. Arcia also played first base, third base and the outfield.

The baseball card pictured here was issued by Topps Chewing Gum in its 1973 set; Arcia never played in a regular season game for the Kansas City Royals, but did hit .256 in 119 games for the Omaha Royals in 1973, while leading American Association shortstops with 194 putouts and 384 assists.
