Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Bill Laskey made an immediate impact when entering the majors with the San Francisco Giants in 1982, going 13-12 and leading the team in wins. His first major league win, on April 28th, was a complete game shutout against the Montreal Expos in what was just his second career appearance. He again led the Giants in wins in 1983, going 13-10 despite only pitching in 25 games total that year.

Laskey's career took a downward turn after that: his 26-22 record over the first two seasons were followed by just a 16-31 record over his last four years in the big leagues. He had a particularly difficult stretch in the second half of the 1985 season: he started off the year by going 5-11, 3.55 in 19 starts, before being traded to the Montreal Expos on August 1st along with OF/1B Scot Thompson in return for 1B Dan Driessen. In 11 games for Montreal (7 starts), he was 0-5, 9.44 as he plumbed new depths of ineffectiveness with each appearance. Following the season, he was traded back to San Francisco, with the Expos obtaining P George Riley and minor league OF Alonzo Powell in return. He pitched 20 times in relief for the Giants in 1986 then finished up his major league career with the Cleveland Indians in 1988 when he went 1-0, 5.18 in 7 games, all in relief again. Laskey spent three more years with minor league affiliates at the Triple-A level before hanging up his spikes after the 1991 season.

He was formerly a baseball analyst for NBC Sports Bay Area, and is now a radio host and on-air personality for KNBR.
