Biographical Information

Angel Mangual played seven years in the majors, appearing in three World Series. He hit the game-winning pinch single in the 9th inning of Game 4 of the 1972 World Series. He was the third straight pinch-hitter to be successful for the Oakland Athletics that inning. The A's entered the bottom of the 9th inning trailing the Cincinnati Reds, 2-1, when Gonzalo Marquez started a rally with a one-out pinch single. Pinch-runner Allan Lewis moved to second base on Gene Tenace's single and scored when veteran Don Mincher came through with a pinch hit. Mangual then batted for pitcher Rollie Fingers and pushed a pitch from Clay Carroll through a drawn-in infield to end the game.

He is the brother of fellow big leaguer Pepe Mangual. Pepe played his major league career entirely in the National League, while Angel was almost entirely in the American League.

Angel was born on the same day, March 19, 1947, as Garry Jestadt and Don Rose. Garry made his major league debut two days after Angel did.
