Lee Smith went on to a long career as a closer with the Cubs and several other teams and ended his career as the all-time save leader at the time with 478; Willie Hernandez would save 32 games in 1984 with the Detroit Tigers to win the 1984 American League Most Valuable Player Award and Cy Young Award; Bill Caudill would save 36 games for the Oakland Athletics that same season and made the All-Star team; Jay Howell would go on to replace Caudill as Oakland's closer in 1985 and ended his career with 155 saves.
