1909 Chicago Cubs
1909 Chicago Cubs / Franchise: Chicago Cubs / BR Team Page[edit]
Record: 104-49, Finished 2nd in National League (1909 NL)
Managed by Frank Chance
History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1909 Chicago Cubs won 104 games, which at the time was the sixth highest total in major league history, but their string of three consecutive pennants was snapped because the Pittsburgh Pirates won 110 games, finishing first by a comfortable margin. The Cubs would return to win the pennant again in 1910.
When the Cubs played the Pirates on October 3rd, with the pennant already decided, it was the first meeting in major league history between two teams that had won 100 games - including postseason play. It would not happen again in the regular season until October 1, 1962, in the firs game of the three-game playoff between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants.
