History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
The 1944 Chicago Cubs won on opening day, then lost their next 9 games under manager Jimmie Wilson, who was dismissed after losing both ends of a doubleheader to the St. Louis Cardinals on April 30th. Interim manager Roy Johnson lost his one game at the helm, then Charlie Grimm opened his tenure with 3 straight losses, and one win in his first seven games. Yet, after this highly inauspicious beginning, the Cubs ended the year only 4 games under .500 and would win the National League pennant in 1945.
Awards and Honors[edit]
- All-Stars: Phil Cavarretta, Don Johnson and Bill Nicholson
