The 1938 Chicago Cubs won the National League pennant after falling behind the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates for most of the season, even firing manager Charlie Grimm on July 20th. They rallied under new player/manager Gabby Hartnett and won the pennant on Hartnett's famous "Homer in the Gloamin'", in the bottom of the 9th inning of the second game of a doubleheader against the Pirates on September 27th.

It was during this season that Cubs owner Philip K. Wrigley hired sports psychologist Coleman Griffith to improve training methods and provide assessments of players and his manager from a psychological point of view.
