History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1910 Chicago Cubs won 104 games, exactly the same total as in 1909, but this time it was enough to win them the pennant, as the Pittsburgh Pirates, who had had a tremendous season in 1909, faded back to 86 wins and a third-place finish. For the Cubs, it was their fourth pennant in five years, the final year of the greatest run in franchise history. The pitching staff was led by King Cole, who went 20-4, 1.80, and Mordecai Brown who was at 25-14, 1.86. Four other pitchers won in double figures.

Interestingly, manager Frank Chance skipped over Cole when the World Series came around, preferring to go with the veterans who had pitched in their three previous World Series appearances, convinced that the rookie did not have enough experience to be used in such big games. Facing the Philadelphia Athletics, Chance designated Orval Overall for the opener, followed by Brown and Ed Reulbach, before finally turning to Cole with a three games to none deficit in Game 4, because Reulbach, Harry McIntire and Jack Pfiester had all been hit hard in Game 3, leaving Chance with little choice but to go with the youngster, against his original wishes. Cole pitched well, giving up 3 runs in 8 innings to stay even with Chief Bender, and Brown received credit for the Cubs' sole win of the Series when they tied the game in the bottom of the 9th and won it with another run in the 10th, 4-3. Brown then started Game 5 the following day, but gave up 7 runs (4 earned) in a 7-2 loss.
