The 1910 Philadelphia Athletics were the first team in the history of the American League to win 100 games in a season, finishing at 102-48. It was their third pennant overall, and their first since 1905. Pitchers Jack Coombs and Chief Bender combined to go 54-11, with a 2.04 ERA in 603 innings, making up one the best one-two punches in history.

The pair of Coombs and Bender were the only two pitchers used by Connie Mack in the World Series, against the Chicago Cubs: Bender won Game 1, Coombs then pitched back-to-back complete game wins in Games 2 and 3 even though he wasn't particularly sharp in either win. After Bender lost Game 4 in extra innings, Coombs returned for Game 5 and pitched another complete game in a 7-2 win. For all the focus on the pitchers, it was Philly's hitters that brought them the first title in franchise history: they hit .322 as a team against the Cubs, hit 19 doubles and scored an average of 7 runs per game. Eddie Collins, Frank Baker and Danny Murphy all hit over .400, the latter driving in at least one run in each game, ending up with 9 RBIs in 5 games.
