1910 Chicago White Sox
Record: 68-85, Finished 6th in American League (1910 AL)
Managed by Hugh Duffy
Ballpark: South Side Park/Comiskey Park
History, Comments, Contributions[edit]
On July 1st, the 1910 Chicago White Sox played their first game at their new home, Comiskey Park. They would remain there for the next 80 years. The team holds the modern (post-1900) record for lowest team batting average over a complete season: they finished at .211 in 156 games. A few 19th Century teams had lower batting averages, all of them in fewer games, however. They also posted the lowest OPS by any team since 1893, at .536. It was largely a function of era, however, as the five worst teams all played between 1908 and 1910. This explains in part why pitcher Ed Walsh could lead the American League in ERA at 1.27 - the lowest of his illustrious career -, but still end up with a losing record, at 18-20.
