Season[edit]
The 2014 Chicago White Sox had a definitive Cuban flavor, with four players born on the island on its opening roster: SS Alexei Ramirez, OF Dayan Viciedo, back-up C Adrian Nieto and 1B José Abreu. Abreu was one of the biggest sensations in the majors in April, his first month as a major leagues after starring in the Serie Nacional for a number of years and defecting to the United States. In April (and one game in March), he set a rookie record by driving in 32 runs while hitting 10 home runs. He led the American League with a .617 slugging percentage and 19 extra-base hits.
