1984 American League Most Valuable Player Award

From BR Bullpen

The winner of the 1984 American League Most Valuable Player Award was Willie Hernandez of the Detroit Tigers.

Hernandez was a relief pitcher for the World Champion Detroit Tigers and also won the 1984 AL Cy Young Award. Hernandez has 78% of the vote with 16 first place votes, followed by the Minnesota Twins' Kent Hrbek (63%, 5), and the Kansas City Royals' Dan Quisenberry (60%, 5).

Interestingly, Quisenberry won the American League Rolaids Relief Award, which is given to the league's best relief pitcher. However, the Rolaids Relief Award is based on a point system, not a writer's vote. Still, Quisenberry was not undeserving of either of the three awards as he finished second in the Cy Young Award voting, grabbing 9 first place votes to Hernandez' 12.

1984 marked the only season Hernandez ever received consideration for either the MVP or Cy Young Awards.
