Biographical Information[edit]
Gordy Mackenzie was signed as an amateur free agent in 1956 by the Kansas City Athletics. Mackenzie made his major league debut on August 13, 1961 against the Chicago White Sox. He made it into eleven games that year as a catcher and never returned to the major leagues as a player.
His minor league career ran from 1956 to 1966. During the winter of 1963, Mackenzie was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the minor league draft after having spent most of his minor career in the Kansas City organization.
Mackenzie began a career as a minor league manager in 1966. He won the Florida State League championship while managing the West Palm Beach Expos in 1974, and the Carolina League championship while managing the Kinston Indians in 1995. He was inducted in the Kinston Professional Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
He was also a coach on the major league level with the Kansas City Royals (1980-1981), Chicago Cubs (1982), San Francisco Giants (1986-1988), and the Cleveland Indians (1991). He also served as the major league advanced scout for the Indians and served in that capacity for the Houston Astros. MacKenzie also served as an instructor for the GCL Astros in 2009-2013.
