The Kinston Indians were an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians in the Carolina League. Previously known as the Kinston Eagles and Kinston Blue Jays, the team became known as the Indians when they became a Cleveland farm club in 1987. They played their home games at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, North Carolina. In 2012 the team moved to Zebulon, NC and were renamed the Carolina Mudcats, taking the name of the AA Southern League club that recently relocated to Pensacola, FL.

The Carolina League operates on a split season schedule with the divisional winner of the first half playing the divisional winner of the second for the division title. Since 2001, in the event that the same team wins both halves, that team plays a wild card team. Prior to that, the team got a bye. The Indians have occupied the four-team Southern Division of the league since their creation in 1987.
