Biographical Information[edit]
Ken Bolek was a minor league player, minor league coach, a major league coach, and minor league manager, and is currently an instructor for the International Performance Institute (IPI) aka The Baseball Academy - a high level training school for elite baseball players from all levels of amateur and professional competition, run by IMG Academies.
Bolek was a 30th-round pick of the Cleveland Indians in the 1972 amateur draft. Bolek attended the University of Arizona and Mississippi State University. He was selected in the 24th round of the 1976 amateur draft by the Detroit Tigers. The outfielder split the 1976 minor league season between the Clinton Pilots (.286/~.478/.361 in 53 games, with an amazing one walk per game average) and the AAA Evansville Triplets (1 for 2, one walk, two runs in three games). In 1977, Bolek played for the Montgomery Rebels and batted .231/~.361/.365. He was second in the Southern League with 80 walks, trailing only Dwayne Murphy. In 1978, Ken was on the Waterloo Indians (8 for 30, 8 walks, 14 total bases in 12 games) and the Chattanooga Lookouts (.220/~.398/.275 in 36 games).-
He got his start in coaching with Cuyahoga Community College in 1979 and 1980. During his tenure there, they were Ohio Junior College Champions. At Mississippi State University in 1981, Bolek was a graduate assistant for the team as they made it to the College World Series. He then went on to coach the Columbus Astros in 1982-1983 and manage at the professional level (see chart below) and spent two years as a coach for the Cleveland Indians (1992-1993). Ken has been the Director of Baseball at The Baseball Academy since 1995.
